Altos de Rioja is located in Elvillar, a small village in one of the freshest areas in Rioja Alavesa, on the foothills of Sierra Cantabria. It’s in the heart of Rioja’s best wine growing areas, at 700 metres above sea level. This boutique winery balances the richness of the ‘terroir’, the traditional work at the vineyard and the latest technical advances. Altos R moves from its previous installation in Laguardia to a new, modern building. Equipped with the best technologies, the new facilities will help in the production of great wines. All of the wines in the Altos R portfolio are aged in barrels. 80% of them are French oak (Taransaud, Saury, François Frères) and 20% are American oak (Canton) barrels.
Jean Marc Sauboua is an international award-winning winemaker from Bordeaux (France). He began his career at the famous first growth Chateau Haut-Brion, worked at top estates in South Africa and New Zealand, and has since been involved in special winemaking projects that have taken him to Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, Argentina, Moldavia and back to France. Roberto San Ildefonso started out in the Rioja Alavesa in the early 1980s. By the late 1990s he had successfully developed the trailblazing Bodegas Sobreño (D.O. Toro). Bienvenido Muñoz comes from a long line of respected winemakers. To widespread critical acclaim, he has built upon continued and transformed the activities initiated by his family in 1940 in the sector, with Bodegas Muñoz (La Mancha). So Altos de Rioja Viticultores y Bodegueros arose out of a wealth of experience and a single, shared passion: to make wines of great quality with a respect for traditional methods.
